You should really consider getting yourself a variable speed strobe light. This will allow you to adjust the strobe to match the piece that you are working on and it will look like it is standing still. You could adjust the speed and make it look like it is turning slowly in one direction and you will be able to judge your work without having to stop the lathe in order to see the progress of your work.
The dangerous part is wearing gloves around rotating machinery, never ever do that!
